No one wants to be rejected. As social beings we need to belong, it is a part of our nature which I also believe is our downfall. Because of this our ego cannot handle being rejected therefore we do what we must to belong somewhere, regardless of how much it goes against who we are. But the question I would like to bring to attention is how far is too far? What keeps a lot of people from pursuing who they truly are is the fear of societal pressure. Fear of others opinions, so we do what is expected of us rather than what we really want to do. This chapter shares the story of a person who hid the person they really were and lived a miserable life pretending to be who they weren’t. Why? Because this person felt they needed to please society instead of themselves. We as people fear the judgment of others, there is always this constant struggle of what others will approve of. The hardest part of overcoming this is pushing out the thought that you will not be loved for who you are. If you love yourself then no other opinion should hinder you. Honesty is the best medicine.

I think people are so afraid of being honest with their self because they are afraid of the unknown. Not knowing what will happen once they expose to the world their true identity. No one in this world is perfect therefore no one should be able to judge others. Unfortunately this is not how our world works but I think if we all make an effort to not judge people we can make the world a better place to live in. People are only looking for acceptance and I don’t think that such a thing should be that difficult to find. Two different people don’t have to agree but they should be able to have enough respect for one another to try to understand.
