Sensibility and Sensibility was originally published in 1811. It was the very first published work of English novelist, Jane Austen. I read this book when I was in high school and I absolutely fell in love with it. Austen has a knack for weaving realism and social commentary (of course relating to her time period) in a way that makes the stories of the characters both relatable and engaging.

The story is about Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances. The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative’s property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak. Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor’s warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

SYNOPSIS:

Just days before his wedding, wealthy and handsome Declan Fitzgerald (of the Boston Fitzgeralds) leaves his fiancee, his job, and his home on the East Coast to buy a decrepit old mansion near New Orleans;he couldn’t understand his impulse to buy the mansion. All he knew was that ever since he saw Manet Hall, he’d been enchanted – and obsessed – with it.Determined to restore Manet Hall to its former splendor, Declan begins the daunting renovation room by room, relying on his own labor and skills. But the days spent in total isolation in the empty house take a toll. He is seeing visions of days from a century past, and experiencing sensations of terror and nearly unbearable grief – sensations not his own, but those of a stranger. Local legend has it that the house is haunted, and with every passing day Declan’s belief in the ghostly presence grows. Only the companionship of the alluring Angelina Simone can distract him from the mysterious happenings in the house, but Angelina too has her own surprising connection to Manet Hall – a connection that will help Declan uncover a secret that’s been buried for a hundred years.

Note: This book is a must read if you are into romance novels with an edge of mystery and suspense. It definitely kept me entranced from the beginning to the end
