“You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.”

Oh, The Places You’ll Go is a children’s book by Theodor Seuss Geisal, better known as Dr. Seuss.

Now I know the last book I recommended was a children’s book as well, but I think they’re worth more than most people give them credit for. Childrens’ literature reflects and has the power to perpetuate or change the way each generation impacts the world, all while remaining palatable and engaging to a wide range of individuals.

This particular book I’ve chosen has the power to do just that. Despite the whimsical rhymes and splashes of brightly-lit illustrations, the overarching theme revolves around reaching success and self-fulfillment through the darker possibilities of loneliness, fear, and confusion.

As with most Dr. Seuss books, the message in this book is applicable to every age. With graduation season coming around, perhaps you can pick up the book and gift it after you’ve gone and read through it yourself.

Personal Anecdote: I have my own personal Party Edition copy (that has sparkles all over it) that I take with me wherever I move. The inspiration and honesty can be a nice pick-me-up when the finish line becomes hard to keep in sight.
