As a young girl growing up, the world cup was an exciting part of my summers. Having a father that is religiously devoted to soccer, I stayed caught up with the games. Although I had a soccer stint when I was 9 years old, I still didn’t know much about the game but still managed to stay caught up during the world cup.
Of course growing up I didn’t know much about the corruption that happened behind the scenes of the World Cup. Recently criminal proceedings have been issued against FIFA president Joseph Blatter by the Swiss attorney general. The investigation is looking into mismanagement specifically looking into a contract between Michel Platini, president of the UEFA (Union of European Football Association) where Blatter is paying Platini approximately 1.5 million Euros.
This is not the first time that FIFA is under scrutiny and suspicion. With the investigation of other high ranking officials selling their votes in the bids for hosting the World Cup, specifically for the next two coming up, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, there is no denying the doubts and questions of corruption that many people have.
Reading about other details of corruption within FIFA has brought more questions than excitement. Check out this article here for a timeline of FIFA’s corruption.
