Earlier this month, the pairings for UFC 197 were announced, featuring fights between Conor McGregor, “The Notorious,” and Rafael dos Anjos, as well as Holly Holm, “The Preacher’s Daughter,” and Misha Tate.
The 197th pay-per-view fight event is already generating buzz since McGregor, the current Featherweight title holder, intends to challenge dos Anjos, the Lightweight title holder. If McGregor is successful and walks away with the title, he’d be the only UFC champion in history to hold two belts at one time.
The fight is also highly anticipated because of Holm’s match up with Tate. Holm recently knocked out the previously undefeated Bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey, in probably the biggest upset of the year. After confirming that she wouldn’t be back in time for UFC 200, Rousey gave a statement to TMZ confirming that she’d be back in the octagon for 2016, and that she expected a Holm rematch.
The outcome of UFC 197 will be monumental if both McGregor and Holm win, though winning will require both champions to be strategic. McGregor would be moving up a weight-class, fighting against an experienced Lightweight fighter while Holm would be fighting against one of the most experienced fighters in her division as well as a former champion.
The fight is scheduled for Saturday, March 5th, 2016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tickets for the event go on sale starting January 22nd, and the press conference for the fight broadcasts on the 20th.
