Every May, UCLA welcomes approximately 5,000 newly admitted transfer students and their families to explore and become familiar with the UCLA campus. Admitted students have opportunities to explore booths, visit their major departments, and listen to student experiences by current UCLA students. With over 20,000 transfer applicants for the school year and only around a 25% admit rate, Transfer Bruin Day 2016 was an exciting opportunity for admitted students. Not only did they understand more of why UCLA is a globally recognized school, but they had a first-hand experience of the campus itself.
Beginning with the University Welcome, all attendees gathered together in the Pauley Pavilion and were greeted by notable campus staff to mark the start of Transfer Bruin Day. Following the welcome, transfer students and their families were free to attend campus and housing tours led by UCLA students; faculty lectures such as “What’s Wrong with Fat?” and “Secret Passages, Ancient Curses: New Research in the Tomb of Tut-anck-Amun”; presentations by various student organizations, school services, and departments; and the school fair, a large showcase of the hundreds of opportunities available to transfer students in terms of academics, student life, and academic goals.
Some of our staff at the Writing Success Program, alongside the Undergraduate Writing Center, had the chance to present what the WSP and UWC entails and how our services are available to incoming transfer students. After our presentation, we provided a panel-like “Q & A” in which many students voiced their concerns with university-level writing, general questions about university life, and questions about our services. It was a very enjoyable and intimate experience that left many students feeling more prepared for UCLA.
All events at Transfer Bruin Day provided a more wholesome image of the campus. Transfers who have already submitted their intent to register can become more confident knowing that they will be attending a globally recognized university, while those who are undecided become more informed in making their decision to attend UCLA. For undecided students, the deadline for their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is by 11:59 pm on June 1st.
