Winter Welcome and Updates

Dear Readers,

I cordially welcome you back to another quarter with us. As we look forward into a new quarter and a new year, I would like to remind you of a few things regarding the Writing Success Program and our blog.

ESL/ELL Counselor

This quarter we are welcoming back one of our previous counselors, Monica Mendoza, to the team. She is taking up the special role of the English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Learner (ELL) Counselor. While the ESL/ELL Counselor will focus especially on helping students who speak English as a second language or are less familiar with English, ESL and ELL students can continue to see any of the regular counselors like before. Monica’s specialty is in Spanish. Let’s have a round of applause for Monica!

In addition to her counseling duties, Monica will be posting weekly on the blog regarding issues that face ESL/ELL students. Therefore, we will add a new category to the blog called ESL/ELL, which will contain topics such as grammar, vocabulary, writing expectations in American classrooms, etc. Posts will go up on Sunday. Look out for the first ESL/ELL post coming up this Sunday!

Weekend Writing Warrior

Weekend Writing Warrior prompts used to go up on Fridays at 5 PM. They will now be posted on Saturdays at 9 AM. This means that we will have blogs posts every day. A big thank you to you all for making this possible!

Guest Blogs

If you like our blog and have something you wanted to share with us and fellow Waterhole readers, this is your chance! Commemorating five years in a relationship? Perhaps you want to get the word out about the amazing work your organization is doing. Maybe you have an innovative strategy for dealing with midterms stress. Or perhaps you had a unique experience studying in Turkey.

Guest blogs can be on any topic you want and you will get the opportunity to work with a WSP counselor to bring out your voice in the best piece of writing possible. Send inquiries my way at if you are interested in writing a guest blog. You can check out previous guest blogs here.

Writing Counseling Sessions

As a reminder, students have two ways of accessing our 1-on-1 writing support services. These are: 1) appointments (1 hour, make reservations online at and 2) drop-ins (15-30 minutes, no reservation necessary, view drop-in hours here). If you want help with booking an appointment, come in to our office and we will be glad to assist you. Or you can come by just to say hi! We are located in UCLA’s Student Activities Center, Room 105F and 105G.

Please come to appointments! Our counselors are providing their time so that they can help students who need help. Please respect their time and the chance for other students to get help.

Questions? You have several ways to contact us! Send an email to or email our project director, Layhannara Tep, at Questions about social media or the blog itself? Email me at If you prefer to contact us through social media, connect with us on Facebook or Twitter!
