On the day that you wed

On the day that you wed

On the day that you wed

As you brush back your hair
Tiger-lilies in vases surrounding
So large no one could hold them
Above your body so wide
like the mouth of a river
Foaming at the touch of a mountain

Will you whisper her name
As you tuck a matching flower
Into your breast pocket

Will you think of the Sierras
Strong and resolute
As rivers course through their bedrock
Pushing and breaking
Centuries of foundation

Will you be a peak too high to touch
A summit forbidding any breath
Or utterance or cry
Unless it stings of defeat

On the day that you wed
As you wait down the isle
Black suites surrounding you
Like dominoes about to fall
Over and over at the sight
Of beauty

Will you whisper her name
As you take her hand
and say will you be mine
