“With our heart in our hands and our hands in the soil…”

from “El Plan de Aztlan” by Rudolfo Anaya and Francisco Lomeli.

Though the original ending of the quote is “We declare the independence of our mestizo nation,” one can personalize the ending of the quote to reflect their goals. During MEChA’s Raza Weekend two years ago¨ I ended that quote with, “I will not forget where I come from as I begin my journey at UCLA.” Today, as I am about to begin my third year at UCLA¨ I end it with, “I will challenge the disparities low-income communities face.”

What does this quote mean to you and how can you personalize it to reflect your goals?
