What’s Happening: Period Poverty

Just last month, Scotland became the first country to make period products free for all.

This is a huge win for all menstruating folks in the country and brings to light issues surrounding the access to period products.

Period poverty is the inability to afford menstruation products in order to manage one’s cycle. Many without access to sanitary products are forced to use rags or toilet paper instead, which can lead to infections.  This—of course—does not take into consideration any pain medications or access to a physician someone might need to manage more aggravating symptoms.

According to the University of Michigan—in addition to the existence of the pink tax—period products are not covered by SNAP benefits, putting those from low-income communities at a disadvantage.

Period poverty is an issue that many don’t consider a real problem.  There is already a stigma surrounding menstruation making it out to be something shameful and disgusting.  Given the embarrassment that has been ingrained in those who experience menstruation, speaking up about something as simple as needing a pad from a friend or talking about your experience is difficult.
