Argentina’s Senate voted to legalize abortion, making Argentina the largest country to legalize abortion. This comes as a result of activists’ efforts and the growth of the feminist movement in Latin America.
Many hope this legislation will set a precedent for other Latin American countries to follow suit. Catholicism is prominent throughout Latin America, especially in Argentina—birthplace of Pope Francis. Given the fact that one of the countries most heavily influenced by Catholicism was able to legalize abortion gives hope to activists in other countries facing the same obstacles.
