What’s Happening? Purple Tier

Dominating headlines right now is conversation about another round of stay-at-home orders. For good reason though as cases are rising at an evermore rate. On a personal note, more and more of my peers are telling me of how they are getting exposed; these times are scary.

If you are choosing to stay plugged in with the news coverage on this third high wave of cases in CA, you may have heard the term purple tier. Purple tier is the strictest tier in California’s four-part color-coded county organizational system for reopening. 51 of the state’s 58 counties are purple. A county that is in purple means that the pandemic is widespread. In a more quantitative sense, there are 7 new cases daily per 100,000 and more than 8% of tests are coming back as positive. What does this mean for businesses? Many non-essential indoor business operations are closed. As of November 28, 6 of CA counties are in a red zone (meaning there is substantial spread of the virus) and 1 county is in the orange zone (moderate spread).

In this purple tier, virtually all indoor activity—from wedding ceremonies, to dining, to recreation—is prohibited. Elementary schools are exempt from this restriction if they have been granted waivers. As we approach the end of the year, there is a certain nostalgia to the sentiment of flattening the curve we had back in March/April. Stay safe, wear a mask, re-acclimate yourself to the hobbies that kept you busy and at home the beginning of this year. I am praying for my community, thinking about you all.
